Film: Ice Warriors

The training is tough as the U.S. sled hockey team prepares for the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, in ICE WARRIORS. Sled hockey, called “murderball on blades,” is played as aggressively as able-bodied hockey – but these players battle with their sticks, sharp sled runners and the serrated ice picks used to propel their sleds. They fight it out at eye level with a fastmoving puck in this game of force, speed and strategy.

STEM Club

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is an up-and-coming club on the MWCC campus. STEM was established last Spring and they are seeking to recruit new members.

Victor Dhliwayo said he joined because “it sounded fun” and “it seemed like a good idea.” He is one of the approximately 12 current members of the club.

Recruiting methods include, according to Dhliwayo, “talking to students, networking, and having a presence at the BBQ Fest” with a neatly designed billboard on display for all to see. read more

Sexuality and Gender Alliance

The Sexuality and Gender Alliance Club (SAGA) has been on campus for at least four years. The club focuses on establishing a community within itself. Most meetings consist of games and other activities that assist with their goal. Members also put effort into understanding and educating themselves about the LGBTQ community.

SAGA holds numerous fundraisers and bake sales throughout the year to help with their finances and establish more of a presence in the college. read more

ID cost is $10. Returning students who already have an ID should stop by the MWCC library on the Gardner Campus or the front office on the Burbank, Devens or Leominster campus to have your ID validated for the fall semester at no charge.

Film: Boy Erased

Boy Erased tells the story of Jared (Hedges), the son of a Baptist pastor in a small American town, who is outed to his parents (Kidman and Crowe) at age 19. Jared is faced with an ultimatum: attend a gay conversion therapy program – or be permanently exiled and shunned by his family, friends, and faith. Boy Erased is the true story of one young man’s struggle to find himself while being forced to question every aspect of his identity.

    On April 26, every member of the Mount Wachusett community was saddened to learn of the death of Professor Edward Stevens. Stevens was a MWCC faculty member for 51 years of his life, teaching various courses in science, electronics, and mathematics.

    According to the faculty page on the Science Department’s website, Professor Stevens wrote this about himself: he enjoyed gardening, skiing, swimming, hiking, reading, and playing tennis. Stevens believed that emphasizing to students how science is involved in everyday life was very important, which is why he taught science courses, according to the faculty page. read more

Dr. James Vander Hooven, MWCC’s incoming President is officially taking over on March 18th.

Vander Hooven previously worked at Landmark College, a four year school in Vermont, but he has worked at two community colleges in the past. He was President for four years at Tohono O’odham Community College in Arizona and Lakes Region Community College in New Hampshire as Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. He said, “Community colleges is where my passion is.” read more

Pitchers and catchers reported for their first workouts on February 14th, marking the official beginning of a new baseball season. After their early exit in the 2016 playoffs and David Ortiz going into retirement, this Red Sox team faces plenty of questions heading into the new league year.

Who is going to start at third base?

Last year for the Red Sox third base was a revolving door. They never had a true every day starter. This is mainly due to the injury of Pablo Sandoval early in the year. After the Red Sox traded who many people thought would be their future third baseman in Yoan Moncada and one of their more versatile infielders in Travis Shaw, this spot is going continue to be a question mark for Boston. read more

After a crazy tournament in 2016, we head into this year’s March Madness tournament expecting the same level of excitement. There is always that one Cinderella team in the first round or two that completely busts everyone’s bracket and make things crazy. Expect to see the same thing this year along with plenty more upsets, buzzer beaters, blowouts, and early exits for top seeds.

Last year we saw the Villanova Wildcats silence all of their doubters and win the National Title for the first time since 1985. It was truly something special considering they play in one of the weakest conferences in Division I basketball and nobody thought they could do it. The one team that resembles them the most this year would be Gonzaga. read more
