Gina Vilayphone, student trustee and founder of the food committee, said that by Fall 2018, the student body should see major improvements in the accessibility of school food.

The food committee was founded within the Student Government Association (SGA). Currently there are three active committee members. Through passing out surveys, the committee gathered the student body’s opinions on the cafeteria and relayed their words to the cafeteria staff. Common responses from these surveys, according to Vilayphone, included complaints about the affordability. However, there were not many concerns expressed over the quality of the items currently on the menu. read more

(Archive February 2016) SGA at MWCC

By Andrew Hoenig | Assistant Editor

Gardner, Mass. – The Student Government Association (SGA) at the Mount is an elected group of students who represent the students’ interests to the college’s administration.

But in a recent survey done on campus regarding the general knowledge and impact of the SGA, a theme seemed to appear.

Many of the students answered these three words on at least one of three questions, “I don’t know”. In fact, 90% of the students who participated in the survey had little to no knowledge on what the SGA does for students and the school, what clubs it has organized on campus, and what impact it has on the students themselves directly. read more

(Archive December 2011) SGA: Students Don’t Want Community Time Changed

By Leigh Edwards | Observer Contributor

The Student Awareness Committee of the Student Government Association (SGA) said at last week’s meeting that out of approximately 344 MWCC students recently surveyed, 90 percent are in favor of keeping community time as it stands now, from 12:30-1:30 p.m., Monday- Thursday. The SGA also voted to accept the Music Club as an official club at MWCC.

The following items were discussed under old business:

  • The SGA’s Thanksgiving Food Drive produced 60 baskets of food and 58 of those baskets were given to area families. Leftover food was delivered to the Gardner Food Pantry.
  • The SGA raised $224.07 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation through a bake sale.
  • Member Caroline Horvitz reported that over 15 people shaved their heads to support the Chrissy Lajoie (a former Student Trustee) fundraiser and over $15,000 was raised for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

(Archive December 2011) Student Profile: Carly Gagne – SGA Member

By Nicole Hilerio | Observer Contributor

Always greeting everyone with a smile and sharing a word of encouragement, Carly Gagne, a Health Major at Mount Wachusett Community College, is a delightful member of the Student Government Association (SGA).

When originally approached with the idea of becoming a part of the SGA, she was slightly uneasy about taking on unknowing tasks. Now, in her third semester as a member, she has gotten the hang of it, seeing it as a part of her college experience.

As an active member, she became more aware of what is going on around campus; she knows the annual events and so she is able to schedule around them and make time to help organize the events. Knowing ahead of time what is going on makes the time easier; a few things are mandatory but mostly its volunteer work that is encouraged and enforced by the members. read more

By Benjamin Allen | Observer Contributor

The Student Government Association voted to allocate $6,729.30 in funds to twenty-two clubs at MWCC. In addition, $500.00 was also allocated to the Green Society to purchase a new water filtration system for the school.

According to the Ways and Means Committee, each semester the clubs will receive half of their allocated budgets from the SGA to run their organizations. Due to limited resources, the SGA was only able to give out approximately 40% of what was requested by the various clubs. To receive all the allocated funds, clubs must perform two community service projects and participate in two student life training or club expositions. The clubs must also spend all of their allocated funds and raise 30% of their budget requests through fundraising. read more

By Jenny Cooper | Observer Reporter

The Student Government Association (SGA) met on April 19 for the final time this semester. The elections were run two weeks prior so the meeting had both incumbent and new members in attendance.

The SGA election on April 5 and 6 was the second time they used online voting. Voter turnout rose from 125 to 113 since the last election. “A small increase, but an increase nonetheless” said Greg Clement, Advisor to the SGA. The ballot question, Do you approve the removal of the following sentence from the SGA By-laws in Article 5; Section 6: All officer candidates must have a minimum of two months experience as a seated SGA member, was approved by an 87 Yes to a 28 No vote. read more

(Archive March 1, 2011) SGA Elections Successful

By Jenny Cooper | Observer Contributor

The SGA online elections “were very successful,” said Greg Clement, Assistant Dean of Student Life. “We had 116 online votes, of which three were disqualified. Worcester State’s big election in the fall only averages 100 votes – so we are on par.”

This was the SGA’s first online election. Seven positions were available of which four spots were filled. Those four spots went to Grace A. Santos – Sophomore Representative, Carly Gagne – Freshman Representative, Andrea Gendron – At-Large Representative, Ashley Williams – At- Large Representative. read more

MWCC will hold its second annual Volleyball Tournament on March 26, according to SGA (Student Government Association) President Brian Klink.

According to Klink, even though a trophy will be awarded to the winner, the Tournament is more about networking than competition. The main reason for having the Tournament is to bring some of the other community colleges in the area together to share ideas on ways to improve as a college, said Klink.

The Tournament will be held in the MWCC gymnasium and will be a double elimination tournament. Even with the Tournament being more about networking than competition, “there will still be a trophy awarded to the winner and bragging rights for a year,” said Klink. read more
