(Archive February 2017) Comedy Review: Neal Brennan’s 3 Mics on Netflix

By Jason D. Greenough | Observer Contributor

If you’re like me, live stage performances tend to hit you right in the feels. Something that always affects me is stand-up comedy, and for many different reasons.

The first, and possibly the most prevalent, is that I agree with most of the views and ideas that some of my favorite comics share. The story doesn’t change much with Neal Brennan’s new Netflix special, 3 Mics, but it hit me deeper than any other special has in recent history.

It’s deep, it’s innovative, it’s hilarious, it’s raw, and it’s real. read more

(Archive May 2016) Patton Oswalt’s Talking for Clapping

By Jason Greenough | Arts & Entertainment Editor

Talking for Clapping

When I first sat down to review Patton Oswalt’s new Netflix stand-up special, Talking For Clapping, which premiered on Netflix on April 22nd, I honestly had no idea how to start to review it. Patton Oswalt, if you’re familiar with his brand of comedy, is the type of Comedian that you can’t review easily, unless you know his older “stuff”. In Talking For Clapping, which I did stay up until 3 a.m. to watch the premiere of (damn you, time zone differences!), continues the self-deprecating assault that you can see in Oswalt’s previous Netflix special, My Weakness Is Strong, with life stories about his time living in San Francisco, his early days of doing comedy, how customers are to blame for the poor reputation of Postal workers and DMV employees, being mistaken for a heroin addict and having the flu during a show that he couldn’t cancel. Not to mention, his signature dark humor that make some in the audience and at home cringe, and make most give out a resounding “Awwwww”, all the while keeping himself and his hand-picked inadequacies at the center of everything he says. He does it masterfully, I might add! read more

(Archive April 2016) Review of Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday

If you know me, you may know of my love for Pee-Wee Herman.

I grew up watching Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, and Big Top Pee-Wee with my Brother, and the Pee-Wee Christmas special we owned on VHS is close to its demise thanks to our incessant desire to watch it again and again. It’s safe to say that Paul Reubens’ brainchild that originated as a character in his, how you would say nowadays, “NSFW” stand-up comedy routine, was a big part of the cultural exposure of my childhood. All of this paved the way for an excitement comparable to a small kid on Christmas morning, for the release of Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday, the newest installment of the Pee-Wee Empire, and one of the newest Netflix originals. read more

God, I love stand-up comedy. I drink it in like a sick kitty drinks from a plastic needle. Num, num, num.

….Okay, that was a little weird. I’m sorry. Let’s continue…This never happened.

Where was I? Oh yeah! I love stand-up comedy!

My comedic taste ranges from George Carlin and his political and cultural observations to Dane Cook and his stock room full of d**k jokes. One comic that I have come to especially enjoy as of late though is Tom Segura, who just released his second Netflix-produced stand-up special, and it is absolute gold! read more

(Archive February 2016) Review: Bill Burr’s F is For Family

By Jason D. Greenough | Arts & Entertainment Editor

Who doesn’t go on an occasional Netflix binge from time to time? Don’t kid yourself, we just got back from almost a month off. You had to have watched at least a few days-worth of Netflix originals, and seasons of Network smash hits, which seem to accumulate like rabbits on streaming.

Master of None, Peeky Blinders, Mad Men, Parks and Recreation…the list goes on and on! But one show that stood out to me over holiday break was F is for Family, a Simpsons/Family Guy mash-up of sorts, created by Stand-up Comic and Massachusetts native Bill Burr. read more

Cloning Around with Paul Rudd

Review: Living with Yourself

By Nicholas Papini
Observer Contributor

In a world where genetics and cloning are advanced and common enough that the FDA has a division dedicated to related crimes, Paul Rudd delivers an emotional tale of the bitterness and depression that settles into a person in their mundane life.

Living with Yourself is a new Netflix show released on October 19. It contains 8 episodes of approximately 38 minutes for a total of 215 minutes. The show is created and written by Timothy Greenberg and stars Paul Rudd and Aisling Bea. read more
