(Archive April 2017) A Musical Review: Wicked is Wicked Awesome

By Courtney Wentz | Editor-in-Chief

The Wizard of Oz is a fun movie, but Wicked is even more fun, dazzling, and has many surprising twists.

Wicked the musical tells the story of everything leading up to the death of the Wicked Witch of the West, but they do it with catchy songs like “Dancing Through Life” and “One Short Day.” Then there’s the annoyingly catchy song “Popular,” sung by Glinda about making Elphaba, the wicked witch, popular.

The stage was set up like the insides of an old timey clock, along with a mechanical dragon perched at the top of the stage. Anytime Elphaba used magic, the dragon’s eyes would glow red and smoke would come out of its nostrils. The Wizard also has a mechanical head that looked like it was floating, while he was talking to Glinda and Elphaba. read more

Hamilton Is Not Throwing Away its Shot

By Courtney Wentz | Observer Contributor

Hamilton, a musical written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and produced by Jeffrey Seller, is the most popular, unique, and important show currently on Broadway.

Hamilton is about the life of founding father, Alexander Hamilton, told in the point of view of the man who shot him, Aaron Burr, with the exception of one song.

Victoria Chadbourne, raised in Phillipston, is now an Arts and Entertainment Management major at Dean College in Franklin, MA, where she has stage managed three shows, was an assistant for four, and has been in ten shows. Chadbourne has been passionate about musicals all her life and had some comments to make about the impact Hamilton has on the audience. Chadbourne said, “The music is diverse enough that everyone could find a song they like, the story is incredible, and you might just learn something without having to read a 600 page book.” read more

By Ericka Pultorak | Observer Contributor

“Beehive, The 60’s Musical” premiered on Oct. 10 at MWCC by the Theatre at the Mount. It was directed and choreographed by Trish Aponte. Throughout the entire musical, maybe ten sentences were spoken. Watching them dance around song after song with practically no breaks would make anybody’s feet hurt. Sitting in the front row, I could feel waves of energy rolling off the stage. The audience received a high energy performance, as well as a detailed timeline of the 60’s. read more
