By Sean Ryder | Observer Reporter

Children from the Montachusett Opportunity Council (MOC) Child Care Head Start program, as well as students and faculty, celebrated Women’s History Month and National Read Across America Day in the LaChance Library on March 2.

Students from the Mount read books written by female authors to the children. The children also created bookmarks with thin pieces of foam, colored yarn, and stickers. Books such as The House of the Night, written by Susan Marie Swanson and illustrated by Beth Kromes, and The Odd Egg, written by Emily Gravett, were read to the children. read more

By Meghan Hume | Observer Reporter

MWCC offers help to limit the stress students feel about school work and tests. These sources include The Academic Support Center and the MWCC LaChance Library.

JoAnn Brooks, Assistant Dean of Academic Support Services, works in the Academic Support Center where she supports tutoring and other services they offer for students in need of help. These services include a computer lab, extended time testing for students with disabilities, make- up testing, adaptive lab services, and e- tutoring. “Don’t wait to get help,” Brooks said. “As soon as students think they need help, they should get it.” read more

(Archive March 2006) Library More Student Centered

The library redesign will begin in May once classes have ended, according to Linda Oldach, Assistant Dean/Library and Information Services. Oldach said the redesign project, funded by the college’s first-ever capital campaign, aims to maintain the unique aspects of the library (such as the location and the knowledgeable staff) while creating an “Information Commons” — a student-centered learning space characterized by physical and technological features, with content and staff that will serve the information needs of the extended college community in the 21st century. read more

The LaChance Library is the go-to place for a quiet study spot, with chairs and tables scattered throughout and shelves towering over even the tallest people at MWCC. Students seem to have no say in what books come in or what they need the most. But that is soon changing.

According to Robert Koch, Assistant Dean of the Collaborative Learning Commons, “We’re going to come up with a user experience board at the entry to the library. When you come in, there will be survey questions and opportunities to tell us more about what you need, not just in terms of the books, but in terms of the space and the services.” Koch has only been with MWCC since November of 2021, but he has always tried to put the students first, and this experience board demonstrates that. read more

The Mount Explores the Controversy and Impact of Banned Books

By Katie Holgerson | Assistant Editor

On October 3rd, MWCC held a banned book event at the Brewer Center in the library, free for all students to attend. The event was organized by Michel Cocuzza, the Civic Engagement Coordinator; Shelley Nicholson, Director of the Brewer Center; and Robert Koch, Assistant Dean of Collaborative Learning Commons. A handful of students participated in the event, enjoying complimentary pizza and engaging in group discussion with their peers to help raise student awareness about the issue of banned books, as October 1 – 7, 2023 was Banned Books Week. Banned books are becoming a growing concern, as many schools in the U.S. continue to ban certain texts in their curriculums and libraries. One of the main reasons for this, Nicholson stated, is that these books are perceived to be “…counter to the ‘norm.’ To what society dictates is how they should be.” read more

How Does MWCC Provide for its Prospering Community of Readers?

By Elysian Alder | Assistant Editor

The New Books shelf in the MWCC Library.

Collections and Instructions Librarian, Matt Raymond, says that the Mount’s LaChance Library has recently purchased “over 800 new books,” adding to an already substantial inventory of “about 30,000 titles.”

The selection process is a meticulous and thoughtful one. Although Mount Wachusett Community College does not currently have student life organizations dedicated solely to literature or book clubs, there’s no shortage of avid readers willing to offer up suggestions or requests to the collections librarians like Raymond. read more
