The Grinch came out in theaters on November 9th. This is now the third version of Dr. Seuss’ book to be made into a movie. This version is most like the original one that came out in 1966 where the movie is depicted in a cartoon style with the Grinch being slightly more family friendly.

The Grinch has a modern twist as Pharrell Williams, a rap artist, narrates the story and Tyler, the Creator produced the soundtrack. Instead of the songs being sung like the older versions, Tyler raps all of the songs in the movie. By doing this the producers, Janet Healy and Chris Meledandri, can connect to and keep the attention of a larger audience. read more

With the holidays rapidly approaching, professors and students provided advice on how to create low-cost holiday gifts using skills they learned in their classes.

Leslie Cullen, a Graphic Design Professor, said that graphic designers can use their graphic design software and fine art skills to customize t-shirts, greeting cards, mugs, bags, blankets, calendars, and virtually anything. Students can design their own greeting cards and print them on cardstock at their homes or by using a printing website such as cafepress.com or personalizationmall.com. If the student has a family member with a favorite character or particular interest, then they can design a t-shirt based on that interest and print them through a printing website or local shop. read more

Happy Hallow-giving-ismas! In the hostile takeover of pumpkin spice everything, candy corn and plump packs of fun-size chocolates flirt with back-to-school notebook sales. At the faintest nip of fall, eggnog cozies up to the coffee creamer.

If you ran into CVS for sunscreen this summer, I hope you did not topple the Hallmark display of Christmas ornaments. Yes, they come out every July. I love the holidays but slow your roll, Mister!

It is bad enough the four seasons are bi-polar. Now big business punts us through the last quarter of the calendar faster than a Hail Mary field goal attempt.   read more

In an exclusive interview on November 27th, Santa Claus himself took time out of his busy schedule to speak with a reporter from the Observer. This is what he had to say:

Q: Thank you for taking the time to speak with me. I’ve always been a huge Santa fan. How did you come to be in this position?

Well, it’s a family job. A lot of people don’t understand that, but Santa was my father, my grandfather, and my great grandfather. It goes back to the 1500’s, [and] I will pass it on to my son at some point when I’m too old to be Santa. read more

It’s the Holiday Season

An Examination of the Holidays Celebrated (and Not Celebrated) at the Mount

By Desiree Leader | Observer Contributor

The holiday season is happening all over the world. Eighty-five percent of people in the United States will be celebrating Christmas–everywhere you look, there are lights, trees, and Santas. As a matter of fact, in America, Christmas is celebrated 14 times more often than Hanukkah, and the ratio of people celebrating Kwanzaa to Christmas is 1:49. Although Christmas is the most popular holiday in America, it is clearly not the only one. Despite the Mount taking steps to be inclusive, some people feel that more could be done.  read more
