In today’s food market, agricultural products often contain unhealthy ingredients and it can be hard to avoid these items, Professor Thomas J. Montagno explained, and he has advice on how to make better choices.

“Monsanto manufactures some of the deadliest chemicals and pesticides of the world,” said Dr. Montagno, Chair of Natural Resources at the Mount and professor for about thirteen years. “If you don’t buy your food organic, chances are it’s from Monsanto,” he added.  read more

Body image is a big problem that has been affecting girls, continues to affect them, and appears to be more of a problem every year. Girls as early as 7-years-old are seeing themselves as fat.  It is all due to the rise of the media and the fascination it has with photoshopping women, which creates unrealistic images of women, according to Kerrie Griffin, Psychology Professor at Mount Wachusett Community College.  . 

Holly Tata, MWCC student, said, “I have always known that the models on the covers of popular magazines were photoshopped and tried to convince myself that even though I may not live up to the media’s standards of skinny, it doesn’t mean I’m not skinny. The problem is the media is hard to get away from since it’s everywhere, so after a while of being constantly subjected to such beautiful and influential figures, it’s hard to continue to convince yourself that you are still good enough.” read more

(Archive December 2011) Bottled Water: Is it Really Good for Us?

There needs to be more education about the ill effects of bottled water, not only for health reasons but for the environmental issues linked with plastic.

This seven-billion-dollar-a-year industry acquires the water for free (sometimes from areas suffering from major droughts), spends on the average nine cents a gallon to bottle it and then sells it back to us for six dollars a gallon. 40% of bottled water is nothing more than filtered tap water.

Public drinking water must be tested hundreds of times a month in every city. Whereas bottled water is not regulated by the FDA and any testing is performed by the companies producing the water. These test results are not submitted to the FDA and are not accessible to the public. read more
