By Krista Traffie | Observer Reporter

Alan Nogee, a member of the Union of Concerned Scientists and authority on renewable energy, will be one of the speakers at Earth Day events, scheduled for April 10.

For the very first time, Mount Wachusett Community College will officially observe Earth Day this year.

On April 10, MWCC will host a science fair for middle school students from the surrounding towns and will feature two environmental speakers.

“I’ve always thought Earth Day was a good way to recognize our earth, where we live,” said Prof. Tom Montagno, advisor to the Green Society. “This is the perfect way to raise awareness.”

However, at the time, there wasn’t much concern for the environment regarding electronic waste. It wasn’t until 1976, when the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) went into effect, that the disposal of e-waste into landfills became illegal. The purpose of the RCRA was to protect the environment and human health from the toxicity and hazards of waste disposal. read more
