(Archive February 2017) Comedy Review: Neal Brennan’s 3 Mics on Netflix

By Jason D. Greenough | Observer Contributor

If you’re like me, live stage performances tend to hit you right in the feels. Something that always affects me is stand-up comedy, and for many different reasons.

The first, and possibly the most prevalent, is that I agree with most of the views and ideas that some of my favorite comics share. The story doesn’t change much with Neal Brennan’s new Netflix special, 3 Mics, but it hit me deeper than any other special has in recent history.

It’s deep, it’s innovative, it’s hilarious, it’s raw, and it’s real. read more

(Archive May 2016) Patton Oswalt’s Talking for Clapping

By Jason Greenough | Arts & Entertainment Editor

Talking for Clapping

When I first sat down to review Patton Oswalt’s new Netflix stand-up special, Talking For Clapping, which premiered on Netflix on April 22nd, I honestly had no idea how to start to review it. Patton Oswalt, if you’re familiar with his brand of comedy, is the type of Comedian that you can’t review easily, unless you know his older “stuff”. In Talking For Clapping, which I did stay up until 3 a.m. to watch the premiere of (damn you, time zone differences!), continues the self-deprecating assault that you can see in Oswalt’s previous Netflix special, My Weakness Is Strong, with life stories about his time living in San Francisco, his early days of doing comedy, how customers are to blame for the poor reputation of Postal workers and DMV employees, being mistaken for a heroin addict and having the flu during a show that he couldn’t cancel. Not to mention, his signature dark humor that make some in the audience and at home cringe, and make most give out a resounding “Awwwww”, all the while keeping himself and his hand-picked inadequacies at the center of everything he says. He does it masterfully, I might add! read more

By Jason D. Greenough | Web/Social Media Editor

A lot of us are infuriated with the current state of politics in our country.

– Uh, scratch that –

All of us are infuriated with the current state of politics in our country.

Many of us choose to express that feeling with anger, others with disenchantment and apathy. Both paths are very understandable. But then there is another path, that many have used over the years, and that the path of humor. George Carlin, Dick Gregory, Bill Hicks, Jon Stewart…So many comedians have made politics and current events the centerpiece of their hook, their message. W. Kamau Bell, the socio-political comic who you may have seen on CNN as the host and creator of United Shades of America, is no different, and brings the heat, once again, with Semi-Prominent Negro, his newest stand-up special. read more

“Comics on a Mission” Coming October 29th

By Jason Greenough | Web/Social Media Editor

“Comics on a Mission”, a night of stand-up comedy to support veteran students at MWCC, will be hitting the stage on Saturday, October 29th, at The Theater At The Mount.

The event, with all proceeds going to supporting veterans on campus, will be hosted by Brockton native Comedian Will Smalley, and headlined by Boston Comedy vet and legend Tony V, who will be joined by a number of fellow Bay State comics including Andrew Mayer (son of MWCC Director of Veteran Services, Bob Mayer), Kate Procyshyn, and MWCC student Brian Dickens, who a lot of you may know, even if he is taking a semester off from classes here at the Mount. Dickens, a greenhorn when it comes to bringing his unique brand of stand-up to the stage, has always found himself comfortable in the spotlight, and for him, this opportunity, which was granted to him as an award at a stand-up contest in the spring, is no laughing matter. read more
