The Graphic & Interactive Design Club seeks out new members with an interest in aiding the local Gardner community.

Gina Khouth, the President of the Graphic & Interactive Design Club, urged individuals with an interest in both graphic design and community projects to join the club.

Members of the GID Club learn how to create designs for t-shirts. They also participate in projects that aid the community such as the Thanksgiving raffle and food pantry. Individuals involved in the club also participate in organizing a trip to New York City.  read more

(Archive October 2018) Clubs & Campus: Creative Writing Club

By Sophia Schlegelmilch | Observer Contributor

The Creative Writing Club offers students the opportunity to connect with other writers and to have their work published and is welcoming all new members.

Michele Walsky, a Professional Writing major, is the president of the club. She joined the club last fall, after taking a creative writing course with Professor Michelle Valois. Walsky says the class inspired her because it focused on “the love of words, not so much the organization. It was about breaking the rules, and it was very freeing.” Walsky has since completed and published a novel.  read more

    Aunt Pat’s Irish Soda Bread

    Submitted by Desiree Leader

Photo by Kate Remmer on Unsplash

My Aunt Pat was my favorite aunt, and I have many fond memories of her visits when I was a child. She was beautiful, with a gorgeous head of red hair, and so funny. Her visits filled our modest home with joy and laughter. One of the things that I loved about her popping by is that she often brought a loaf of her homemade Irish bread. Her daughter made it a few weeks ago for her mother’s celebration of life and was kind enough to share the recipe with me. I think I will make it tonight, slather a slice in butter, and make myself a nice cup of tea to go with it. Thank you for the memories, Aunt Pat. read more

(Archive September 2018) Parking Lots and Garden Plots

By Christine Nelson | Observer Contributor

The newly completed parking lot outside of the fitness center, and the location of the previous Community Garden.

Current parking lot construction will bring improvements to campus parking lots, yet requires the removal of the community garden.

All parking areas will be repaved. Parking in front of the Fitness Center will expand to accommodate more parking spaces—an additional 24 regular spaces and 11 accessible spaces. The community garden near the Fitness Center will be removed to allow for this expansion. A catch basin system will be installed to improve drainage. Parking lots B, C, and D remain the same size, yet will gain over 100 additional spaces as lines are redrawn for more modern cars. (Current lines are based on 1970 car sizes.) There will also be new lighting.  read more

It has come to our attention that there was some misleading information in our previous edition of The Mount Observer regarding the Dress for Success Fashion Expo.

The 2018 Dress for Success Fashion Expo was the biggest it has been to date, involving not only the Parent Support Group (PSG), but also Women of the World (WOW) and the Sexuality and Gender Alliance (SAGA) clubs. Planning for this event began in January and continued up to the event. Members of PSG worked tirelessly to be sure the event went smoothly.  read more

    Ingredients:

    • 1 ball of pizza dough
    • 1/3 cup of pizza sauce
    • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
    • Pepperoni
    • Mozzarella and parmesan cheese
    • Basil

    Directions:

  • Preheat the oven to 450F and allow your pizza stone to warm up in the oven while you shape your pizza.
  • If you don’t have your pizza stone no worries, line a baking sheet with parchment and set aside.
  • On a well-floured parchment paper spread your pizza dough into a heart shape. If using a pizza stone build your pizza now, no need to transfer it to a baking sheet. Use a pizza paddle to place it in the oven or a large cutting block.
  • Gently transfer it to a baking sheet or large cookie sheet and fix up the heart shape if needed. Spread the tomato sauce on the dough then add the cheese then the heart-shaped pepperoni and bake in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes. Check for doneness at around 10 minutes.
  • Top the pizza with the chopped-up basil, slice, and enjoy!
