By Jenny Cooper | Observer Contributor

The SGA online elections “were very successful,” said Greg Clement, Assistant Dean of Student Life. “We had 116 online votes, of which three were disqualified. Worcester State’s big election in the fall only averages 100 votes – so we are on par.”

This was the SGA’s first online election. Seven positions were available of which four spots were filled. Those four spots went to Grace A. Santos – Sophomore Representative, Carly Gagne – Freshman Representative, Andrea Gendron – At-Large Representative, Ashley Williams – At- Large Representative. read more

A Letter from the President

By Daniel M. Asquino | MWCC President

As we begin this new year, we do so with great enthusiasm and anticipation for the changes that are ahead, beginning this semester. Most obvious, of course, are the two new wind turbines, which will bring the college to an entirely new level as a leader in renewable energy when they go online in March.

Equally – in fact even more impressive – are the changes that will be occurring within the classrooms at our campuses, for this year marks the start of a new season of renewal at Mount Wachusett Community College. read more

BIO 128, Plants and Society (taught by Thomas J. Montagno, Ph.D.). It is a non-lab 3 credit hour science course which can serve as a general elective or a science elective, depending on the specific program requirements. It will be offered at the Gardner campus and at Leominster campus (1st cycle). It is intended for students that have an interest in plants and the many ways they are used in various societies around the world as well as the historical significance of plants in shaping our world. The formal course description is: “Plants and Society is a survey course that looks at the origins, historical and current use of plants in societies including food, spices, clothing, beverages, building material and medicines. The search for and exploitation of many plant species by humans has directly and indirectly shaped the geopolitical world we now live in. These topics will follow a brief introduction to basic plant structure, function, and life cycle. The increasing role of plants in biotechnology will also be studied, as well as the important uses of algae and fungi as they relate to people, plants, and plant products.” read more

The Alpha Beta Gamma National Business Society is conducting a semester-long magazine project for troops in Iraq. Drop-off boxes are located in the Commons area of the Gardner campus.

The Business Society is responding to a request from Major Todd Bajakian, a former Alumnus of the year, who recently returned to Iraq and said his troops would appreciate copies of magazines since there is little to read.

(Archive November 2007) Your Survey Results for Noncredit Courses

The Division of Lifelong Learning and Workforce Development would like to thank all of the students who participated in our survey to determine if there was interest in participating in non-credit offerings during community time. We were very pleased with the survey results and are working on creating low cost programming for our day students in areas that interest them the most. Students showed an interest in topics that ranged from recreation and leisure activities to computer trainings.

For the spring, we intend on piloting the program by offering at least one non-credit offering per month. But we are willing to offer more programs if students show an interest. The more students participate, the more offerings we can put together. Besides hiring external instructors, we are also willing to interview students who feel they have hobbies or skills that they would like to share with other students. Have suggestions? Please feel free to contact Missi Sargent, Director of Non-Credit Programs at m_sargent@mwcc.mass.edu or by phone at 978-630-9273. Congratulations to Kayla Barone, winner of the $25 Wal-Mart Gift Card raffled for completing the survey. read more
