The Mount Observer was founded in 2005, after at least 10 years without a student paper on campus. To date, the Observer has published 4 issues every semester for nearly 15 years, with Professor Susan Goldstein as the paper’s faculty adviser for the entire time.
In 2008, the Observer won The Payne Award for Excellence in Journalism, a national award presented at the University of Oregon that “celebrates the tough decisions made in the newsroom.” The winner was Ashley Gough, former Managing Editor, who wrote a story about newspapers being taken from their news stands and thrown away by former college President Daniel Asquino.
