(Archive November 1, 2011) Green Street Café to Participate in The Heifer Project

By Jillian Richard | Observer Contributor

The Green Street Café is participating in a fundraiser this November. The Heifer Project is an international organization founded in Rutland to provide the world with knowledge and insight on how to maintain food.

The main purpose is to provide animals to underdeveloped countries, giving them the tools to keep food an ongoing process. For Instance, Lynne Franciose gave an example of a water buffalo; they have the strength to pull a plow to maintain a field for whatever food they are growing. Cows are great for milk and chickens are an asset to keep eggs on hand at all times. Absolutely no slaughtering takes place with this project.

The fundraiser aims to keep the college aware of this organization, to donate to hungry families across the world, and to pass on the spirit of giving. Last year in December the cafeteria collected $800. This year the goal is $1000, making a little more every year to show that everyone can make the difference in the world as well as the community.
