(Archive November 2007) Getting to Know Greg

By Joslyn Thiem | Observer Reporter

Perhaps you know him as the Assistant Dean of Students, or maybe as a colleague. There is a man here at the Mount who goes above and beyond his job title. This man is Greg Clement, who has been a part of the staff since January 31, 2004.. When asked if he thinks he is a workaholic, he said, “I prefer to call it a “passionate worker” because I love my job and I love what I do.”

Clement is the type of person who when you meet him, you feel at ease immediately. He is laid back and feels it is important to be supportive and help students become part of the greater college community. Student affairs staff had a huge impact on his life in college and he wants to pass that on to students he works with today. As Clement put it, “I feel as though I’m paying it forward.” He stated, “Student activities in the past gave me a voice, some of the greatest times in my life, and have given me a purpose.”

Clement grew up in Maine, where he loved to go boating and participate in other activities as a child. Following high school, he went to Husson College, located in Bangor, which is a private business college with about 4,000 students. While there Clement was President of his freshmen class, President of his fraternity, Vice-President of the student government and a Residential Assistant. When asked if he was a well liked RA., he stated that he felt as though he was because he knew how to take care of problems but he didn’t have many to deal with because he was on a close floor that felt like a small community.

In his spare time, Clement loves to roller blade, watch movies, and spend time with a few close friends. He said that as hard as it is to believe, when he is not at work he feels he is an introvert. When he is at work, he is an extrovert because of all the activities he helps to plan and take part in. Clement loves to travel and plans to travel a lot more when he retires, which he hopes will be in ten years. One of his favorite places in the world is Brazil; he has been six times. He has both family and friends there and just loves everything about Brazil. Some of the other places he said he would like to travel to include Australia because he loves kangaroos, koalas, and sharks and is also a big fan of the accent the people have; he would also like to see Iceland and Churchill, Quebec.
