(Archive December 2016) Post-Election

By Scott Mellecker | Observer Contributor

It was undoubtedly a heated election. Some people were surprised, and even more people were shocked. It didn’t matter who a person voted for, all were stunned to find out who the winner was.

The recent days following the election have been hectic. Some people are scared, others are protesting, and students are being handed teddy-bears to cuddle. There has never been so much up-heave over an election.

The halls of Mount Wachusett Community College seemed grim. It didn’t seem as if your favorite candidate lost the election, but instead seemed like there was a massive terrorist attack that took out half the country. A look of sadness covered the faces of students at the school.

However, one student didn’t have the same look of fear. Lily Greenland had a different outlook on the whole thing. She was still surprised by the outcome, but didn’t see it as an impossible task for Trump.

“My initial thought was that it would be close, but Hillary would win. I thought that Trump gained a huge advantage after the last re-opening of the FBI investigation, but I still thought Clinton would pull out the win”, said Greenland. Greenland felt that the hatred for Clinton was why Trump had a strong chance to pull out the victory.

“I thought his ultimate downfall would be his character and the way he conducted himself, but that seems to be what eventually put him over the top”, Greenland stated in regards to Trump. Many people felt exactly how Lily felt, thinking that Trumps downfall would be his over-the-top personality. But others saw what Lily realized after, seeing his character as a sign of passion for this country.

Ever since the election occurred, protests have been happening all over the country. When asked about how she felt about the protests, Lily stated, “all Americans are allowed the constitutional right to protest. Good for you people who are protesting, have at it. But for those of you who are burning the American Flag and holding posters of Donald Trump being hung, I hope that your right gets taken away”.

Lighting the American flag and supporting violence is intolerable, no matter who is doing it. Greenland has strong feelings towards the protesters. “These protesters are setting a worse example than Trump ever has”.

The final topic of conversation was how she felt about students not going to class and even getting the ok to take a couple days off to recover from this emotional roller coaster. “The only way I can describe it is absolutely ridiculous. The younger generation is acting like a bunch of cry-babies. I may not have voted for Trump, but he is our soon to be President meaning that I will support him. These kids need to get themselves together and move past their feelings towards Trump and people who support him.”

Greenland finally wanted to make a point about unity in our country. “Trump, Clinton, and Obama all stated in their post-election speeches that at the end of the day, we are not democrats, we are not republicans, but we are Americans. These protests are not displaying the unity that they are preaching”.
