According to Bob Mayer, Instructor of Photography and Graphic Design, the new photography concentration, created this semester under the business major, is a good opportunity for students. “I’m excited. I think it’s a wonderful thing,” Mayer, who has been working at MWCC for 12 years, said.
There are currently twelve certificate students and six degree students enrolled for a total of eighteen students in the photography program. Students get a quality education in both photography and business at a fraction of the cost of larger schools like The Hallmark School of Photography or Art Institute of Boston. “Are they six times better than us, I’m not so sure,” Mr. Mayer said.
Mayer did a lot of the research to determine what photography classes were required to get the program moving but he didn’t work alone; it was more of a collaborative effort. The entire broadcasting degree program had to be revamped. John Little and Joel Anderson were very instrumental in this process. Mayer also received help and support from a large group of people including Chuck Weitze, Janice Barney, and the Academic Affairs Committee which approves new major programs. The photography program has been in the works for many years. When Mayer first came to MWCC, there was only one photography class offered; a film photography class. Two years ago a certificate program in photography was offered, and now the new degree program encompasses five photography classes.
