Professor Silkey has been teaching science courses at MWCC since January 2008. This spring semester, she teaches four courses Monday through Friday; two Anatomy courses, Physiology 1, Physiology 2, and one Nutrition course. She also teaches Maymester and summer session. Professor Silkey studied nutrition in graduate school and has always been interested in nutrition and its relationship to health and disease.
“A healthy lifestyle is very important to me; I think we have a responsibility to take care of our health,” Silkey said, “I also want to stay healthy and physically fit so I can continue to participate in sports and other activities with my family.”
The advice Professor Silkey gives to her students is to learn as much as they can and to master the course work by seeking its relevance to their major or career goals, opposed to just aiming for a high score to pass the class. She encourages students to stay motivated, and to never give up on material if they don’t understand it right away.
“Science can be challenging to learn because it has its own language, but it also is an intriguing and fascinating discipline with countless unanswered questions just waiting for a new scientist to explore,” Silkey said. In each class Professor Silkey teaches, she tries to provide students with strong information on the subject as well as information that can be applied to their own lives or careers.
