Broadcasting and Communications Major, Ray Worthley, 27, from Leominster, is not planning on attending graduation. Why? He does not think that getting his Associate’s Degree is that big of a deal. He did say that if he ever decides to get his Bachelor’s he would attend that graduation. He was also planning on having a job in the field during this semester. It did not happen.
Worthley technically graduated in December 2010. He took 5 semesters at MWCC as well as a few intercession and summer classes. Normally, his degree would have taken only 2 years at the Mount but because he took fewer classes during the semesters, it ended up taking longer. He worked full-time while going to school and he wanted to do well.
He grew up in Lunenburg and graduated from high school in 2002. At first, Worthley said he was only going to take 1 year off from school but that ended up becoming 6 years. However, Worthley said that by the time he did end up going to college, he was ready. Taking the time off allowed him to become more mature. “I knew why I was here and I knew what I wanted to do,” he said.
Worthley specifically came to MWCC for Broadcasting and did not become directly involved with any clubs or activities at school. Despite not attending events, he did have a hand in editing videos and other material from these gatherings. In this way, he was able to see what was happening without personally being involved.
During Worthley’s time at MWCC he did an internship with Comcast Sports Network, Celtics Division. He said this was beneficial to his education. He advised students to make the most of opportunities such as these because even though you have to pay to work, you gain life experience and earn credits at the same time.
Worthley talked about how all his professors were helpful to him and his education. One in particular was his Television instructor, Joel Anderson, who helped advise and schedule classes. Worthley also did Work Study in the Media Services Department with Art Collins.
Worthley remembered his Geology class and how difficult that was for him. But he knew that when he was finished, despite the low grade, he had worked hard for it. He said, even though the class was difficult, the professor was great.
One of Worthley’s ambitions is to work for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). He has been a fan of it since he was a kid and wanted to figure out how to get involved. He knew he would not be able to actually wrestle so he looked in to other options. WWE is a travelling production show so it will allow for him to visit new places.
Worthley’s advice to students is to “do the best you can and stay on top of your work.” He said to figure out what you want from your experience at MWCC and go get it. Take advantage of school programs. He said that college is a life experience. Stuff you do here, you will never forget. Not only are you getting education, but you are getting the experience as well.
Looking back at his college experience, Worthley said he wouldn’t change a thing. Anything he did, whether it was a complete success or utter failure, it helped him grow.
