Amongst the hundreds of students graduating this semester, Nancy Storer is one of the many students walking away from the Mount with more than just a degree. Storer is a strong advocate for women. Her experience here has helped enabled her to explore herself and shed light on others in the process.

Storer will graduate with her Associates in Human Services. She plans to continue her schooling at Wellesley College or Framingham State University. With her education in Human Services, Storer would like to work with women to establish their place in society.

After Storer finishes school, she would like to start working for a non-profit organization, such as Women for Women International. This group helps women of third world countries start their own businesses and stop the cycle of poverty they have been raised in. Storer said, “Know

yourself, know your passions, and what excites you… That will make you a better mother in the long run.”

She believes, strongly, that women need to establish who they are first before establishing anything else, such as a family. She has three children and had her first child at 24. If there is one thing Storer could change about her past it would have been to establish her independence before anything else. She said, “I’d keep my husband; I’d keep my kids,” but goes on to explain that it’s “real easy to lose yourself in those roles.”

Being brought up in an Arab- American family, Storer said, “I have felt firsthand the effects of male oppression, and how narrowly defined gender roles hurt not only women but men as well.” Her career choice is based off her upbringing and wanting to help women be heard. “It is my firm belief that when women have control over if and when they have children, and also a way to earn an income.”
